CAIRO: Egypt’s water needs are growing due to overpopulation, said Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Mohamed Abdul Muttalib in a Wednesday press statement.

Muttalib said domestic water needs have reached 85 billion cubic meters, yet Egypt only receives 55.5 billion from the Nile, urging the necessity of rationing water consumption.

Muttalib added that the annual water share for each person declined from 2,800 cubic meters in 1959 to about 660 cubic meters, adding that the United Nations Development Program sets a minimum standard of 1,000 cubic meters per person per year.
