ISMAILIA: Fifty-three cargo ships carrying 3.2 million tons worth of goods crossed the Suez Canal on Friday, breaking a new record for the number of ships to cross and the amount of cargo being carried on the same day.

Tarek Hassanein, the media spokesperson of the Suez Canal Authority, said that the north convoy witnessed the crossing of 26 ships with 1.4 million tons, with the Panamanian cargo ship MSC IRENE carrying the largest load, 156,000 tons, coming from Portugal en route to Malaysia.

Twenty-seven ships crossed from the south carrying 1.8 million tons, with the largest load carried by Danish cargo ship EVELYN MAERSK, 171,300 tons, coming from Malaysia en route to New Zealand.
