CAIRO: The government will start to implement a new system to collect garbage in Cairo and Giza within the week, Minister of Local Development Adel Labib said on Thursday.

The system aims to improve services and eliminate the problem of hygiene in Greater Cairo. It will depend on collecting garbage directly from houses, not from the streets, Labib said in statement on Thursday. This would legalize the conditions of cleaners, establish a national cleaning company to make a change in the cleaning system, establish intermediate stations to sort out waste and other organic waste, and establish recycling factories to use to produce biogas.

Labib said the project will provide unemployed youth with job opportunities, since to recycle every ton of garbage, it would provide seven jobs, he stressed on the necessity to get district chairmen and NGOs, besides awareness campaigns, involved in the project to measure its efficacy.
