CAIRO: Telecommunications companies will not be granted new ranges of mobile numbers until they require their distributor to implement the rules of the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, Executive Director of NTRA Hisham al-Alayli said in a Saturday statement.

In cooperation with the telecommunications police department, NTRA detected some distributors authorized by mobile operators who do not comply with NTRA rules in terms of the official price of sim cards, the completion of customer data and making “correct, official contracts” for new lines.

Sources at mobile operators told Youm7 that their companies do not have the legal authority to control distributors, adding that their demand for new ranges of mobile numbers has declined due to the overwhelming increase in sold lines.

According to a statement released by the Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center in March, the number of cell phone lines used in Egypt amounted to 98.8 million in November 2013.
