GAZA CITY: The Al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, claimed Wednesday shelling southern Israel in response to what it called “the crimes of the Zionist enemy” in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

In a statement, the brigades warned it was only “an initial response” to the “assassination” of three of its members on Tuesday.

The Israeli media said about 25 rockets were launched from the strip and landed at southern Israel.

The “code red” sirens sounded across southern Israel after militants fired tens of rockets from northern Gaza in a co-ordinate attack, the Israeli media said on Wednesday.

Reports say this was the heaviest barrage since the November 2012 conflict in Gaza ended.
