CAIRO: Al-Khanka Appeal Court sentenced Tuesday the deputy sheriff of New Cairo police station to ten years in prison and gave another three officers one-year suspended sentences over the killing of prisoners last August, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.

On August 18, 37 prisoners died from suffocation in a truck transporting them to Abu Zaabal Prison, when a police officer threw a gas bomb into the car and closed its doors. Only eight prisoners in the truck survived.

Judicial sources told Reuters Tuesday that the prosecution charged the four police officers with involuntary manslaughter and extreme negligence.
