CAIRO: Egypt Air halted its flights to Tripoli Friday after two rockets at dawn hit the runway of the Tripoli airport, a source from Egypt Air told Youm7.
“Flights were halted but we hope to reopen the airport within hours,” a Libyan senior security official told Reuters.
The runway’s infrastructure was damaged by the rockets, according to the Libyan News Agency.
Relations between Libya and Egypt have been tense over the past month; in January Libyan militants seized seven Egyptian diplomats in Tripoli in response to the arrest of a Libyan militia figure by the Egyptian Authorities and were released after seven days.
On Feb. 24 seven Egyptians were found fatally shot on a beach in Benghazi, and the state has yet to identify the offenders. A number of Egyptian citizens were detained March 16 by Libyan authorities, and 12 have been deported for having improper visas.
