CAIRO: The Supreme Presidential Electoral Committee (SPEC) is responsible for the delay of the presidential candidacy official registration, Presidential Advisor for constitutional affairs Ali Awad said in press a statement Friday.
“I cannot predict when the registration for presidential candidates would be officially available, since SPEC only can decide that,” Awad said.
“Interim President Adly Mansour will respond on Saturday to a suggestion presented by political parties and factions on the presidential elections law article regarding granting immunity to SPEC decisions and whether he decides to keep it or not,” Awad said.
SPEC spokesperson Hamdan Fahmy said that candidacy registration and voting dates will be announced on Monday, Al-Akhbar newspaper reported Friday.
Fahmy said that SPEC will determine the process of candidates, choosing their electoral symbols during Saturday’s meeting. It will set the regulations for media, international and local NGOs that will observe the voting process, Al-Akhbar reported.
According to Al-Akhbar, SPEC sources said that adjourning announcing electoral process dates resulted by the committee’s intention to complete all the procedures that are set before the elections.
Meanwhile several political parties criticized the delay since the Muslim Brotherhood can take advantage of it, Al-Shorouq newspaper reported Saturday.
Socialist Popular Alliance Party head Abdel Ghafar Shokr said there is no reason for the delay since SPEC was formed and worked under the time schedule and that delay is not acceptable, Al-Shorouq reported.
Free Egyptians Party spokesperson Shehab Wagih said the presidential elections law and the elections process were s matter of deep discussions and that may be the reason of the delay, Al-Shorouq reported.
Leading member of Nour Party Shaaban Abdel Alleem said this delay is surrounded by mystery and raises many questions; the faster SPEC finishes its work, the better.
