CAIRO: Security forces seized a barrel of TNT connected to a timer at El Arish International Airport on Saturday, security sources told Palestinian Maan News Agency.

According to the sources, security forces detonated the barrel, which weighed a quarter ton, and intensively combed the area.

The Sinai has witnessed intensive military operations since the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi on July 3, to tighten the authorities’ grip on the region. Police and army personnel in the Sinai have been targeted regularly by militant, often jihadist groups.

The incident coincided with a visit of Military Chief of Staff Sedki Sobhi to Arish. Sobhi traveled to the Sinai to inspect checkpoints as part of the military campaign to iron out hide-outs of militants active in North Sinai, army spokesperson Ahmed Ali said on his official Facebook page.

Also on Saturday, unknown armed men opened fire at the radio station of Arish, eyewitnesses from the Massaid neighborhood told Al-Masry Al-Youm. No injuries were reported.

Armored vehicles chased the gunmen, who managed to get away, according to the witnesses.
