CAIRO: Prominent political activist Alaa Abdel Fatah was released on a 10,000 EGP (U.S. $1,400) bail Sunday pending investigations into his case.
Abdel Fatah and 24 others are charged with conducting illegal protests outside the Shura Council in November 2013. The defendants were protesting military trials for civilians and were dispersed and arrested under the regulations of the 2013 Protest Law.
Ahram Online reported activist Ahmed Abdel Rahman was also released on the same bail amount, and Sunday’s trial was adjourned to April 6.
Abdel Fatah had also been charged with using melee-weapons, assaulting security forces, stealing an officer’s walkie-talkie, disrupting public order, and endangering citizens.
Abdel Fatah was also arrested on Oct. 30, 2011 following charges he had helped initiate the deadly clashes that took place on Oct. 9 outside Maspiro. He was released on Dec. 25, 2011.
