CAIRO: Attorney General Hisham Barakat ordered policeman Ibrahim Ismail to face a speedy criminal trial for the attempted rape of a Russian tourist in her hotel room in Sharm el-Sheikh, Youm7 reported.

Lawyer Ahmed el-Rakkeeb, media coordinator for the attorney general, told Youm7 that investigators received a police report on March 15 stating that a Russian tourist was sexually assaulted in her hotel room in Sharm el-Sheikh.

The suspect allegedly watched the victim when she was leaving a nightclub, the police report said. He followed her to her room, and entered through an open balcony door. He tried to rape her, the police report said, but she called for help and he left the room. She filed a police report the next day, according to Youm7.

Barakat ordered the South Sinai prosecution to investigate the assault.

The coordinator of the I Saw Harassment Initiative Azza Kamel told The Cairo Post that this is not the first such case to occur in Egypt.

Ministry of Tourism Spokesperson Rasha el-Azzayzi told Shorouk News the incident is an extension of the rampant sexual harassment experienced by women on Egyptian streets.
