CAIRO: Abdel Fatah al-Sisi announced he will run for president after resigning as Minister of Defense late Wednesday evening.

The announcement aired on State TV following a meeting of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces, attended by interim President Adly Mansour.

Army Chief of Staff Sedky Sobhy was promoted to the rank of General of the Armed Forces, according to Aswat Masriya website.

Sisi has been viewed as “a national hero” by the masses following the ousting of former President Mohamed Morsi. Several unofficial organized campaigns began preparing to support him as a presidential candidate and urged him to run in elections.

The door for presidential candidacy is not open yet and the exact date is expected to be announced by the Presidential Election Commission on March 30. Head of the Current Popular Party Hamdeen Sabbahi is the only candidate who has announced his intention to run for president “against Sisi.”
