CAIRO: Several political party leaders weighed in on Wednesday after Field Marshal Abdel Fatah al-Sisi announced his bid for president.
Nour Party head office member Shaaban Abdel-Aleem said Sisi’s popularity makes him most likely to win in the upcoming elections, Youm7 reported on Wednesday. He said Sisi is the strongest candidate.
General Secretary of the Free Egyptians Party Mahmoud al-Alaily said the world was awaiting Sisi’s announcement, adding that Sisi’s speech was notable because he began by addressing current problems, and “made citizens part of the equation,” saying everyone shares responsibility for the country.
Spokesperson of the Tagammu Party Nabil Zaki said that Sisi’s running for president ”is a response to popular will.” He told Youm7 that Sisi has promised to build a modern country and has denounced foreign aid.
Some experts remarked that Sisi’s speech appeared to include a message to the Muslim Brotherhood, according to Al Wafd newspaper, namely his statement, “I call on partners in the country to realize that all of us are in one boat and we want to reach a safe port.”
Former Brotherhood leader Tharwat El-Kharabawy told the Dostor newspaper that “there will be a violent response by the Brotherhood” after Sisi’s announcement.
