CAIRO: New Minister of Defense Sedki Sobhi participated in his first Cabinet meeting Thursday after being sworn into the position before the president, Youm7 reported.

Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab welcomed Sobhi, and wished him luck in leading the army, raising combat efficiency and modernizing arms systems, Youm7 reported.

Founder of the Popular Current Party and presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi congratulated Sobhi in a tweet on his Twitter account , writing that he should continue “the patriotic role of the Armed Forces in controlling ‘terrorism’ and protecting the country.”

Sobhi’s resume was published on the Facebook page of Armed Forces Military Spokesperson Colonel Ahmed Mohamed Ali, Shorouk newspaper reported.

According to the resume, Sobhi was born in 1955. He graduated from Military Academy in 1976. He was promoted gradually from a troop commander to division commander, then from the Third Army’s chief of staff to its commander. He was then appointed as the Armed Forces’ Chief of Staff on August 12, 2012.

Also according to his resume, Sobhi has a master’s degree in military science, and has been awarded several merits.
