WASHINGTON: Egypt’s permanent envoy to the United Nations Ambassador Moataz Ahmdeen Khalil stressed on Friday that Egypt is not biased to any sides of the Ukraine crisis.

“Egypt’s abstain to vote on a UN General Assembly’s resolution affirming the Ukraine’s sovereignty and the annulment of a referendum on Crimea is an objective and neutral stance,” Khalil said in statements to MENA.

He pointed out that the concerned countries understand Egypt’s stand which is the same of another 58 countries including China, India, Brazil, Argentina and Pakistan.

The U.N. General Assembly on Thursday passed a non-binding resolution declaring invalid Crimea’s Moscow-backed referendum earlier this month on seceding from Ukraine, in a vote that Western nations said highlighted Russia’s isolation.

There were 100 votes in favor, 11 against and 58 abstentions in the 193-nation assembly.

Two dozen countries did not participate in the vote, either because they did not show up or because they have not paid their dues, U.N. diplomats said.
