CAIRO: Tagammu Party spokesperson Nabil Zaki welcomed on Thursday the Canadian Parliament’s decision to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a “terrorist” organization, Youm7 reported.
The Canadian Parliament voted to blacklist the Brotherhood almost unanimously, Sherif Sabawy, member of the Liberal Party and parliamentary candidate, told Youm7 on Thursday.
The Brotherhood was designated as a “terrorist organization” by the Egyptian government on Dec. 25, 2013, and Saudi Arabia blacklisted the group as well on March 7.
Sabawy said the issue was put to a vote in the Canadian Parliament after some Egyptian political activists in Canada collected signatures from citizens to blacklist the Brotherhood.
The United Kingdom decided to investigate Brotherhood activities in London after reports that the group was conducting illegal acts, Prime Minister David Cameron’s office said April 1.
The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy denounced such decisions, claiming that the West supports “the coup.” Some sources from the Brotherhood stated that Qatar is trying to mediate disputes between the Brotherhood and the British government, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.
The sources added that Qatar seeks to hold a meeting between Brotherhood leaders and the British government to suspend the monitoring of the group’s activities in London, which may lead to blacklisting the group entirely, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.
