CAIRO: The General Secretary of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood called for changing the name of the “orphan’s day” to “a day for our children” or “a day for the child spring,” on Friday.

Azza el-Ashmawy told Youm7 that the name of “Orphan’s Day” contains bad memories.

Ashmawy said the council has contacted the concerned authorities to get a list of children martyrs to offer help and support to them on occasions and feasts.

She said the council held training sessions for the workers at the orphanages to teach them how to deal with children and how to improve their skills.

Cairo held a festival at Al-Azhar Park Friday to celebrate the international Orphan’s Day with over 500 orphaned children. Children from different orphanages participated in events organized by a number of civil associations. They were also given gifts and prizes and enjoyed entertainment and musical performances.
