CAIRO: National Alliance to Support Legitimacy member Magdy Qurqur denied Sunday that the group would organize a boycott of the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for May 26 and 27.

“We are refusing the election not boycotting it,” said Qurqur in remarks to The Cairo Post via phone, adding that how the alliance boycotts the election came under the “invalid” road map. He noted that the official announcement of their refusal of the election would be issued after the close of the nomination deadline.

The alliance was formed after the military ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi. The group rejects the authority of the interim government and has repeatedly called for Morsi’s re-instatement.

Since November, with the entry into force of a protest law, it is illegal to demonstrate in Egypt without first obtaining permission from security forces. Political demonstrations are often followed by clashes between Muslim Brotherhood supporters and security forces.
