CAIRO: Student protests broke out Sunday at several universities in Egypt, including Cairo University, Al-Azhar University, and Ain Shams University Sunday, and security forces entered the campus of Ain Shams University to quell protests, reported Youm7.

The move comes after Ain Shams University witnessed violent clashes between students allegedly affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood and other students. Youm7 reported that unknown people gathered at the Faculty of Commerce and threw stones at demonstrators, which led to the injury of a number of students.

A number of students launched a demonstration at Cairo University to protest against the imprisonment of their colleagues, reported Youm7. The demonstrators chanted against security forces and the Ministry of Interior.

Students also expressed their refusal against the recent decision taken by Cairo University to allow security forces to enter the university in the event of violent protests.

Several student movements issued a statement Sunday calling for people to participate in a human chain to protest against the decision, and to demand that Egyptian authorities release students detained during previous demonstrations.

A group of female students at Al-Azhar University organized a demonstration before the Faculty of Humanitarian Studies. They reportedly raised the flag of Al-Qaeda while demanding that Egyptian authorities release their colleagues.

Al-Azhar University President Osama al-Abd stressed the need for allowing security forces to enter the university to contain violent clashes. During a phone call with Mehewar TV channel, he said that administrative security does not have the capacity to contain violent protests in the university.
