MINYA, Egypt: The Bishop of Minya, Anba Macarius, a Coptic Orthodox leader, was shot at while in his car on Monday as he arrived to the village of Serou for condolences.
The bishop was unharmed, but security officials have not yet identified the assailants.
Bishop Macarius told Youm7 that he blamed the attack on the continued “lack of security that allows extremists to commit such acts of terror.”
The bishop was quoted last month asking for improved security for churches and monasteries in the area. After security forces on Aug. 14 broke up the sit-ins at Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda Square, which had been calling for the reinstatement of former President Mohamed Morsi, Bishop Macarius demanded that authorities better protect religious sites, he told Al-Hayah Al-Youm by phone.
