CAIRO: Ezz El Din Abu Stat, vice president of Cairo University, said on Tuesday that security forces will be permitted on the university campus only to respond to violent situations.
Stat added in an interview with the Al Arabiya channel that the return of administrative guards to universities does not mean interference in the educational process, their only role is to maintain security and confront violence.
He said after the recent bombings by “terrorist” groups on campus, a security system was adopted to allow police forces inside the campus, at the request of the university president.
The vice president added that the police forces will be stationed outside of the university gates.
Earlier Tuesday, representatives of nine Cairo University student unions organized a press conference condemning the decision by Cairo University President Gaber Nassar to allow security forces on campus, Al Ahram reported.
“The presence of security forces inside Cairo University will only move the clashes into campus,” said Ahmed Khalef, head of the student union at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science of Cairo University.
The students proposed alternative solutions to improve university security, including contracting with a private security company and metal detectors at gates, Al Ahram reported.
The student union will organize a protest against the decision on Wednesday, according to Al-Wafd newspaper.
