CAIRO: The power grid is close to reaching its maximum capacity, according to the National Control Center for Electricity, which urged Saturday for citizens to ration their electricity usage.

The center, in cooperation with the Youm7 news website, is organizing a campaign called “Save Egypt from Darkness,” which urges Egyptians to reduce their usage, in order to avoid power outages.

The campaign suggests personal rationing by reducing use of washing machines, vacuums, and water boilers, as well as lighting lamps only when necessary.

Cairo has suffered from frequent power outages this spring, and many worry that the outages will increase in the summer, when usage usually peaks.

The Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker said March 17 the ministry’s goal was to reduce usage by 20 percent, in a meeting with Minister of Environment Laila Iskander on March 17.
