CAIRO:  Head of Interpol in Egypt Gen. Magdy El-Shafie said Tuesday former finance Minister Youssef Boutros Ghali would not be handed over to Cairo due to his international immunity.

Ghali, who is wanted on an international warrant over corruption charges, was granted political asylum from UK, the international police chief in Egypt told MENA.

Paris will not hand over Ghali due to its commitment to the Geneva Convention that regulates the refugee status, El-Shafie said.

Boutros Ghali was sentenced in absentia to 30 years in prison for corruption charges during his service in the government under Hosni Mubarak.
