CAIRO: Power outages will occur frequently in all governorates over the next 10 days due gas field maintenance, reported Al Mashad Thursday.

The return of power-cuts across Egypt has caused much frustration among citizens; the cuts now happen a few times a week, months in advance of the peak use in summer.

Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker said the current electricity shortage amounted between 1,500-2,000 Megawatt not only due the lack of supply but also “excessive consumption”, Al Masry Al Youm reported.

“The power cut will be about one hour daily, even if the power plants receive its due energy” the minister said.

He advised reducing individual consumption, and said that the ministry would be in consultation with the Ministry of Petroleum to find a solution, said the paper.

He added that the ministry is working to find other resources of renewable energy to diversify its fuel sources.

Al Masry Al Youm also reported that the possible increase in electricity prices would be dependent on the categories of consumption, with the increase those who consume the most, over 1000 kilowatts per month.
