CAIRO: The Dostour party plans to start an independent campaign to support presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabbahi, treasurer of the party Mena Halim told Youm7 Tuesday.
The campaign will include organizing a number of human chains, Halim said, adding the party insists that Sabbahi should have an independent campaign “to send a message that the party is not a party of conferences and television shows only but also will have an impact in the electoral battle.”
Halim added that the coming days would witness coordination with Sabbahi’s campaign, as most of the events of the campaign adopted by Dostour party will be assigned by Dostour party except for the issues that need coordination between the official campaign of Sabbahi and the independent campaign especially regarding the massive conferences attended by Sabbahi himself.
The Dostour Party announced its full endorsement of Sabbahi’s campaign Wednesday at a press conference at its party headquarters.
Halim added that the party would coordinate with Sabbahi’s official support campaign to find the best ways to promote him in the elections, the first round of which is scheduled for May 26 and 27.
Sabbahi submitted Saturday 31,100 electoral endorsements from 17 governorates to the High Presidential Elections Committee, making him the second official candidate in presidential elections after Field Marshal Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, reported Youm7.
Sisi’s campaign presented approximately 200,000 endorsements to the committee on April 14 after declaring his bid in February.
Mortada Mansour who announced his bid for the presidency on April 6 said during a Saturday press conference that he will withdraw from the presidential race, reported Youm7.
After Mansour’s withdrawal, Sisi and Sabbahi remain the only candidates, as the window for nominations closed April 20.
