CAIRO: The Egyptian Electric Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency (EGYPTERA) launched on Wednesday a hashtag campaign, #shut_the_power, through its official Facebook page to raise awareness around the usage of electricity and the need to ration power.

The agency is collecting with the hashtag reports of names of streets that remain lit during the day, plans to publish a list daily to help regions shut off the power unnecessarily used in daylight.

As energy is being over-consumed, and wasted with streets remaining lit streets during the day, the Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker has stated that the country will be living in darkness during the summer season, leading to potential turmoil among citizens, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.

The government has been confronting the power outage crisis for the past two months, and citizens have faced increased power outages since March. Many complain that the government appears not to have taken any action to ration wasted power, leaving the citizens to overcome the crisis on their own.

Shaker said Tuesday that fuel supplies to power plants are ongoing at a suitable rate for the current period, and if the supplies continue at the same rate, citizens will not witness power outages for more than a limited time, Youm7 reported.
