CAIRO: Head of the Socialist Popular Alliance Party Abdel Ghaffar Shokr said that the party’s central committee decided to support Hamdeen Sabbahi in the upcoming presidential elections, after 82 percent of its members voted for this in meeting on Friday, Youm7 reported.
Shokr told Youm7 that the party supports Sabbahi due to their accordance in opinions and political orientation with him.
Shokr clarified that the party is focusing on five issues in the coming period, on top of which is national independence and ending subordination. The other issues are self sustainable development, social justice and democracy, separating religion from politics and balanced foreign relations.
Field Marshal Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and founder of Popular Current Hamdeen Sabahi submitted their candidacy to the High Presidential Elections Committee before the door for candidacy was closed, and as such are the only candidates.
To win the elections, a candidate must gain 50 percent of the votes plus one vote.
Egyptians will vote in the presidential elections on May 26 and 27 and the result will be announced before June 6. Egyptians abroad will vote over four days, from May 15 to 18, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.
