Minya court sentences 683 to death, refers case to Mufti

CAIRO:  The Minya Criminal Court sentenced 683 Muslim Brotherhood members, including the Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, to death Monday, and referred the case to the Grand Mufti, reported Youm7.

Per Egyptian law, the mufti must review and offer an opinion on all death sentences before they are finalized. The cases are also eligible for appeal.

The Minya court also issued its final sentence of death to 38, and sentenced 490 others to 25 years in prison Monday; the 528 were originally sentenced to death on charges of killing the deputy head of the Matai police station in Minya Aug. 14, 2013, although 382 were tried in absentia.
