CAIRO: A security source in Cairo Security Directorate said that its director Ali el-Demerdash is studying with the directorate’s leaders a plan to spread the largest number of gendarmes in all districts of Cairo, Youm7 reported.

The gendarmerie is a police force tasked with police duties among the civilian population.

Major General Demerdash said that the directorate is working on equipping all administrations to full capacity. He added that he will form a new administration for a cavalry force in Cairo, and that the Ministry of Interior has been informed to provide the directorate with enough horses, Veto reported.

Citizens expressed different opinions in a survey about the return of the gendarmerie.

Ahmed al-Zieny, a retired employee, told Al-Wafd that the return of the gendarmerie is necessary nowadays, as Egypt is suffering a major security lapse.

Marwa Hashem, who holds a master’s degree in Political Sciences, said that Rod el-Farag suffers from attacks that force people to seek to defend themselves with their own weapons. She added, however, that lampposts should be repaired in the area before returning gendarmes.

On the other hand, Amir Abdel Monsef believes that if all policemen work efficiently, there will be no need for the gendarmerie, calling for intensifying security campaigns.
