CAIRO: The largest e-commerce platform in the Arab world, Souq.com, announced Wednesday the launch of what it says is Egypt’s first “Online Marketplace University” with the aim of assisting young entrepreneurs in starting their own online ventures.
Souq.com will provide needed experience and technical support for participants, along with boosting the country’s e-commerce industry according to a Souq press release. To accomplish this, it will partner with the Egypt Education for Employment Foundation and choose around 100 participants for the inaugural eight-week course. Applicants must have a public institution degree or higher education certificate.
“Souq.com seeks through launching the Online Marketplace University to help foster Egypt’s next generation of e-commerce entrepreneurs and to grow the sector in the upcoming period” said Omar Elsahy, General Manager of Souq.com Egypt. He added that, “We are excited to team with EFE to promote the e-commerce sector in Egypt.”
Elsahy said the value of Egypt’s online marketplace was now 1.8 billion EGP and that the online marketing growth rate had grown by 25 percent in the past few months. He added that Egypt now has 31 million online marketing clients.
The Dubai-based Souq.com internationally attracts over 8 million visitors every month and is growing as more consumers in the Arab world shop online. It offers more than 200,000 products.
