CAIRO: Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy praised Thursday the efforts of UN special representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi and his quest over the past two years to resolve the Syrian crisis.
“Brahimi provided all his expertise in an attempt to find a political settlement which achieves the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom and democracy,” Fahmy said in a statement.
“Egypt stresses the inevitability of working towards a political solution to the Syrian crisis that preserves the Syrian people’s rights and ensures Syria’s unity and territorial integrity” he added.
On May 13, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the resignation of the joint United Nations-League of Arab States Special Representative for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi.
Ban said he accepted Brahimi’s decision with regret.
