CAIRO: Three unidentified assailants in a car shot at security forces outside Al-Azhar University, killing three policemen and injuring eight, according to a statement by the Interior Ministry.

The attack took place early Tuesday, after a number of students demonstrated outside of the Al-Azhar University dormitories, trying to block the road, the statement read, adding that the students threw Molotov cocktails and fireworks at the police officers.

The ministry said that the police officers dispersed the students and forced them to return into the campus, intensifying their presence inside and outside of the university, before the shooting attack.
