CAIRO: Universal Company will not penalize its employees for not voting, Mohamed Abo el-Saoud, the head of Human Resources Operations at the company, told The Cairo Post Wednesday.

Universal, a home appliances company, had issued an administrative decree on Tuesday allowing employees to leave at 2 p.m. on condition that the go participate in the presidential election.

The decree said security personnel at the company would inspect employees Wednesday to check if they had voted or not through the phosphoric ink, or lack thereof, on their hands, adding that those who are found without ink on their hands would undergo a deduction from their salary.

Saoud also added to The Cairo Post that the decree was only to “urge people to go vote and not go home earlier,” he said that employees were not directed to choose a certain candidate and have the right to vote for any of the candidates or even invalidate their vote.
