CAIRO: The Cairo Criminal Court in Tagammu el-Khames decided Thursday to postpone issuing a verdict on Haidy Rasekh’s appeal over a decision to freeze her assets until June 25, Youm7 reported.
Rasekh is the wife of Alaa Mubarak, the son of former President Hosni Mubarak. Alaa, along with his father and brother Gamal, was convicted earlier this month on embezzlement charges. He was sentenced to four years in prison.
The Illicit Gains Authority previously ordered a freeze on Rasekh’s assets represented in villas and apartments in Heliopolis, Sharm el-Sheikh, Moqattam and Ard el-Golf. This decision was made after regulatory agencies proved she abused her power.
The Cairo Criminal Court accepted Rasekh’s request to exclude two apartments at Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza from being frozen, Misr Day reported.
In related news, Alexandria Criminal Court decided to postpone the eighth court session to decide whether to freeze the assets of Hosni Mubarak’s friend, businessman Hussein Salem, to June 7. The decision will cover all his liquid, real estate and movable assets, and companies in Alexandria, Al-Wafd reported.
The Illicit Gains Authority undertook massive investigations looking into Salem and his possible violation of the illicit gains law. The investigations showed that he is subject to the illicit gains law because he is a supervisor in an Alexandria petroleum company funded partially by public funds.
The freezing decision could prevent him, his wife, his children and grandchildren from spending his assets.
