CAIRO: Five soldiers and one officer were killed at the Egyptian border guard forces in Wadi Gedid after anonymous gunmen attacked a military patrol Sunday morning, Youm7 reported.

The gunmen fired from a four-wheel drive vehicle at the military patrol on Farafra-Cairo Road at approximately 4 a.m.

The death of the six Egyptian border guard forces was probably a response to the success of border guards to thwart many attempts to undermine Egypt’s national security, military spokesperson Ahmed Mohamed Ali said on his official Facebook page.

Ali said the border guards succeeded in capturing 68 smugglers as well as huge quantities of weapons and ammunition, vehicles, and narcotic substances. They also thwarted the infiltration of 936 illegal immigrants.

He said that these acts will not prevent the armed forces from performing their national duties but will “encourage them further to complete their mission towards securing Egypt’s national security.”
