CAIRO:  Minister of Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim said the majority of participants in the Congress’ Commission of Fine Arts session endorsed demands to have Egypt join the US agreement signed with 16 world nations that allows the American Immigration and Homeland Security Department to take legal measures regarding smuggling of antiquities.

The congress committee is expected to announce its recommendations Wednesday evening at a press conference, he said.

The request was only rejected by three people who objected considering ancient coins as banned, he added.

The Egyptian delegation, during the closed session that followed the general session, expounded thefts from museums and the smuggling of Egyptian antiquities by gangs as well as methods of smuggling.
