Japan congratulates Sisi on presidential win

CAIRO: The Japanese Foreign Ministry sent president-elect Abdel Fatah al-Sisi its congratulations, describing the presidential election a “step towards political normalization in Egypt based on the roadmap.”

Sisi won the election conducted from May 26 – 28 by netting 96.91 percent of valid votes against his leftist candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi, who obtained 3.09 percent of the votes.

“The Government of Japan expects that under the leadership of the new president, H.E. Mr.  Sisi, a democratic society will be developed through proper implementation of the Road Map with wide range of Egyptian people’s participation in parliamentary election and other democratic process and thus stability and prosperity of Egypt will be achieved,” the ministry said in a press statement on Wednesday.

The ministry highlighted the Japanese government’s keen to continue support to Egypt for achieving a democratic and stable society, the statement added.

About 50 Japanese companies were operating in Egypt as of 2012, according to the official website of Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
