CAIRO: The petroleum sector will focus on increased natural gas production rates in the coming period, Mubasher reported Thursday.
Minister Sherif Ismail said recent discoveries in the Nile Delta region are pushing the sector to intensify its exploration all over the country, he said during an inspection tour to the Desouk project, Mubasher reported.
Khaled Abdel Badee, head of the holding company for Egyptian Natural Gas, told Reuters Egypt’s daily consumption of natural gas is expected to total 5.57 billion cubic feet daily.
Since October 2013, the petroleum sector has seen the signing of 31 agreements to search for oil and natural gas all over the country.
Egypt is estimated to consume 100,000 tons of gas, 50,000 tons of diesel, and 18,000 tons of gasoline daily. Rolling blackouts are common in major cities in the summer months, as the power grid does not have sufficient fuel to meet the demand during peak usage.
