Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs
Sameh Shoukry is a career diplomat who was appointed minister of foreign affairs in the Mahlab Cabinet succeeding Nabil Fahmy, and was sworn in June 17, 2014. Shoukry received a bachelor’s degree in law from Ain Shams University in 1975, after which he worked in the diplomatic field in many Egyptian embassies around the world.
He served as the presidential secretary for information under deposed president Hosni Mubarak from 1995 to 1999. He was Egypt’s ambassador to Austria in 2003, prior to becoming Egypt’s permanent representative at the United Nations in 2008. He then assumed the role of Egypt’s ambassador to Washington D.C. from 2008 to 2012.
Shoukry speaks Arabic, English and Spanish. He has two sons with his wife, Suzy.
