CAIRO: The Ministry of Electricity plans to automate portions of the electricity network in the next ten years in order to raise the efficiency of power plants, said Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker in comments reported by El-Balad Sunday.

“Automating the network will include using new prepaid electricity meters, linking the electricity network with the meter network and allowing payment through recharge cards,” Shaker said.

He also said the Electricity Ministry will direct savings from the new, more efficient plan and the savings from the repeal of the fuel subsidy into developing the electric grid.

The Cabinet approved a controversial plan last Thursday to lift fuel subsidies gradually within five years.
