CAIRO: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi met Sunday with Egypt’s newspaper editors-in-chief to discuss current events and the latest economic decisions.
Sisi told invited media figures at the meeting that the country has suffered due to previous inaction in implementing difficult economic decisions. “I shall not hesitate to make these decisions, as I won’t accept any popularity that may harm the country,” Youm7 reported Sisi as saying Sunday.
Former Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Gamal Bayoumi told Al-Dostor newspaper Sunday that economic decisions made by Sisi were absolutely right, but unfortunately delayed. “Media should take responsibility to explain this for everyone and maintain the ‘street anger,’” he said.
The government announced last week that it would raise fuel prices in an effort to reduce the national budget deficit.
This was Sisi’s first meeting with newspaper heads since he became president. He previously met with them during his campaign.
