CAIRO: The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM) has received a notification that an illegal immigration broker was intercepted trying to help a group of children leave to Italy by boat, Youm7 reported Wednesday.

NCCM Secretary-General Azza el-Ashmawy said children from the Governorate of Fayoum, south of Cairo, were transferred to the Delta governorate of Damietta in preparation for their travel by boat, through the Mediterranean to Italy.

Ashmawy said that illegal emigration and trafficking have “notably increased” during the past few years adding that many children either die by the end of the journey or are  arrested by the Italian authorities and deported.

A study by NCCM showed a notable rise in unemployment in the governorate, besides a notable escalation in the gender-based discrimination among families, giving Fayoum the highest rates of human trafficking.
