CAIRO: Three explosions Monday evening struck an area south of Arish in North Sinai, a day after eight people, including a security officer, were killed and 25 others injured in blasts in Arish, eyewitnesses told Youm7.

Security forces are chasing unknown militant groups in the area, the eyewitnesses added.

Sunday, a security officer and seven others were killed after mortars were launched at a security base near the border with Israel, the Interior Ministry and security officials said, according to Youm7.

A Twitter account associated with the militant group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis claimed responsibility for the attack.

Since the January 25 Revolution, North Sinai has seen a rise in militant attacks following the military ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi on July 3.

Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis has launched attacks against military and police forces, killing dozens, including noncombatants.
