Cairo: A Twitter account that claims to be associated with the Sinai-based militant group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis claimed responsibility for the murder of 22 border guard soldiers in Al-Farafra Oasis checkpoint in el-Wadi el-Gedid governorate after gunmen attacked a military patrol Saturday, Youm7 reported.
“We are responsible for the killing of the border guard soldiers in el-Wadi el-Gedid,” a tweet read on their twitter account.
The Twitter account that claims to be affiliated with Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis frequently claims responsibility for many of the deadliest attacks in Egypt, including the killings of a number of police and military personnel. They have been especially active since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi last summer.
The account has also claimed responsibility for the January downing of a military helicopter in the Sinai Peninsula, and the February bombing of a tour bus that killed four, also in Sinai, and also claimed responsibility for the killing of five border guard soldiers in el-Wadi el-Gedid on the first day of last June.
