CAIRO: A humanitarian aid convoy passed al-Qantara town east of the governorate of Ismailia on its way to Gaza via Rafah border crossing, the Al-Aish we al-Horeya Party announced Thursday.
The convoy was scheduled to reach Gaza Thursday morning but security forces prevented it from passing al-Qantara town for not having an official pass permission, Lawyer Tarek al-Awady, a participant in the convoy told the Cairo post Thursday.
He added the convoy was stopped since 8:30 am despite having all the required permissions to pass through the borders.
“Security forces told us that the procedures have been changed a week ago, and permission from the military intelligence is needed.”
Tarek al-Awady is the lawyer who first called for the medical convoy through a press conference Wednesday in Al-Aish we al-Horeya (Bread and Freedom) Party headquarters.
During the press conference, Awady announced the convoy’s departure time and venue and said that all the required permissions for the convoy to reach Gaza have been issued.
“The aid convoy, worth 2.3 EGP million, represents donations that were collected this week from the Egyptians across the country. The reaction of the Egyptian people was unexpected as they overwhelmed us with donations,” Awady said.
