CAIRO: Israeli soldier Aaron Shaul has been killed after being captured by Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades, according to Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee on his Facebook page Friday.

Five days ago, Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, announced it took Shaul as a hostage in El-Tofah neighborhood in Shajaiya, Gaza, Hamas’ Al-Quds channel reported.

Thirty-three Israeli soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the latest Israel-Palestine conflict, according to statements by the Israeli army Wednesday. Hamas meanwhile claimed 52 Israeli soldiers had been killed, the London-based Alaraby newspaper reported.

More than 800 Palestinians have been killed and 5,200 injured since Israel started its current military campaign against Gaza on July 8, a Palestinian medical official said Thursday evening according to the Egyptian state-run MENA.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a military ground incursion into Gaza on July 17 as an expansion of Israel’s “Operation Protective Edge,” which started on July 10.
