CAIRO: Qasr el-Nil prosecution headed by Judge Samir Hassan ordered Wednesday the imprisonment of five young men accused of sexual harassment during the Eid-al-Fitr holiday, Youm7 reported.
Investigations revealed that the defendants were chasing a girl while she was walking along the Corniche, when she shouted, waved signs and called on pedestrians to help her until security officers arrested the suspects and referred them to prosecution.
Prosecution has ordered their detention for four days pending investigation, Youm7 reported.
“I Saw Harassment” campaign issued a Wednesday report saying that members of the campaign were able to prevent 16 harassment cases on the second day of Eid al Fitr; of which 10 cases were in the form of touching, including three mob harassment cases, two violent sexual violent and four cases were prevented before escalation.
The second day of Eid had witnessed an increase in the number of harassment incidents compared to the first day, despite intense security preparations, the statement reads. The campaign affirmed that all the girls who have survived harassment refused to file a report in police stations, adding that one of them only asked the harasser to apologize to her.
On the first day of Eid al-Fitr, The campaign announced it witnessed and stopped 13 sexual assaults in Cairo.
