CAIRO: Mazahr ensemble for ‘Zar’ music and songs will perform at Makan, the Egyptian Centre for Culture and Arts, Wednesday at 9:00 p.m.
Zar is a community healing ritual of drumming and dancing whose tradition is mainly carried on by women. Umm Sameh, Umm Hassan, and Nour el-Sabah are the musicians of Mazaher.
According to the event’s Facebook page, the music of Mazaher is inspired by the three different styles of Zar music practiced in Egypt: Upper Egyptian Zar, Abu Gheit Zar and the Sudanese, or African, Zar.
