CAIRO: Egypt condemns the “terrorist attack” by Boko Haram in a Nigerian northeastern town and emphasized the need for concerted regional and international efforts to counter “terrorism and extremism,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a Friday statement.

“Egypt expresses its sympathy with the injured victims and the families of the victims targeted by these terrorist acts that these extremist groups have recently perpetrated against the Nigerian government, institutions and civilians,” the statement said.

Boko Haram militants killed dozens Wednesday in Gwoza, the attacked town, and the Nigerian military launched strikes Friday to drive the insurgents out, Reuters reported.

Egypt expressed solidarity with Nigeria in its battle against “terrorism,” which the statement described as a “hateful phenomenon that hinders development in the entire world.”
