UNITED NATIONS, United States: U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday welcomed the appointment of a new Iraqi prime minister and called for calm after outgoing premier Nouri al-Maliki vowed to challenge the decision.

Ban said the appointment of Haidar al-Abadi was in accordance with the Iraqi constitution and represented “forward movement toward government formation in Iraq” which is fighting a jihadist offensive.

The U.N. chief “strongly urges all political parties and their supporters to remain calm and respect the political process governed by the constitution,” said a statement from his spokesman.

Maliki, who had been prime minister since 2006, has accused the president of violating the constitution with the appointment and vowed to stay on in his post.
